Tim Christensen

"I’m an artist who creates historical artifacts of today’s world. I use the most durable medium, porcelain, and the most universally understood language, visual art. My pieces record my experience on this earth during this specific time and place: chaos, relationship, love, that feeling of breathless awe, surprise. These are the stories I’m interested in telling to the future. Porcelain is an inert material, as durable as quartz. Sgraffito chemically bonds information into the porcelain, understandable by anything with an eyeball, and an ability for abstract thought. I fire my pieces in a gas or wood kiln, using wood, ash, heat, salt, and oxygen, to create a tumultuous, hot, corrosive atmosphere inside the kiln. This imparts those things that I can’t, by definition, etch into my pieces: chaos, chance, natural variation. I include these things because they are the increasingly dominant forces in our world today. As is the nature of chaos, I really never know how the work will change, so every piece is a unique representation of the uncertain experience of our existence, as compared to our expectations." - Tim Christensen
